Piece Together Perfection: Custom Puzzle Framing

Completing a 1,000 or 2,000-piece puzzle is a massive triumph. It takes hours of concentration, patience, and sharp eyesight. Once that final, satisfying piece clicks into place, the last thing you want to do is break it apart and stuff it back into a dark box.

At Craft Picture Framers in Claremont, Cape Town, we turn your hard-earned puzzle victories into permanent, beautiful wall art.

How to Safely Transport Your Completed Puzzle

Before we can frame your masterpiece, it needs to make the journey to our Claremont studio safely. To prevent pieces from shifting, separating, or getting lost in transit, follow these simple transport tips:

  • The Board Method: Assemble your puzzle on a portable, rigid surface like a sturdy piece of thick cardboard, a wooden MDF board, or a specialized puzzle mat.
  • The Sandwich Technique: Place a second layer of stiff cardboard directly on top of the completed puzzle. Securely tape or clamp the two outer layers together to sandwich the puzzle tightly in place.
  • The Roll-Up Mat: If you used a felt puzzle roll-up mat, simply roll it up carefully as instructed. The friction of the felt will keep the pieces perfectly locked together until you arrive.

A Friendly Note: Please avoid gluing your puzzle at home! Many commercial craft glues cause puzzles to warp, bubble, or leave behind an uneven, cloudy residue. Let us handle the bonding professionally using our specialized, archival-safe mounting equipment.

Different Ways to Style Your Framed Puzzle

Puzzles come in incredibly diverse styles, from vibrant abstract art to retro vintage landscapes. We offer two distinct framing layouts to match the mood of your piece:

1. The Borderless Close-Fit Frame (Sleek & Contemporary)

For a minimalist, modern aesthetic, we frame the puzzle right up to its edge. We mount the puzzle permanently onto a rigid, stable backing board and fit the frame profile directly around the perimeter. This layout mimics the clean look of a modern art print, letting the geometry of the puzzle shapes make a bold statement.

2. The Matboard Border Surround (Classic & Elegant)

If you want to give your puzzle a more traditional, high-end gallery feel, we introduce a custom-cut archival window matboard border. By surrounding the puzzle with a wide border in a complementary color (such as a crisp white, deep charcoal, or soft cream), we give the image room to breathe.

Puzzles Are Paper: Why Glass is Essential Long-Term

It’s easy to forget that puzzles are essentially multi-layered, compressed paper products. Because they are made of paper and organic starches, they are highly vulnerable to the environment if left unprotected.

Why Your Puzzle Requires Professional Glazing:

  • Preventing Moisture Damage: Exposed paper acts like a sponge, absorbing humidity from the air. Without glass, a puzzle will eventually warp, expand, and the printed image will begin to peel away from its cardboard backing.
  • Dust and Dirt Shield: The tiny cracks between puzzle pieces are absolute dust magnets. Putting a puzzle behind glass keeps it completely sealed against dirt, smoke, and grime that are impossible to clean out later.
  • UV Light Protection: Standard puzzle inks fade rapidly under sunlight and ambient room lighting. We highly recommend our premium Art Glass option, which provides museum-grade UV protection to stop fading in its tracks while completely eliminating reflections. It makes the glass virtually invisible, so you see the crisp detail of your puzzle, not your room’s reflection.
